Fishing reports weekly! That’s our promise here at Southern Country Charters and we keep our promises. Our captains have been out fishing this week and have all the details on what fish are currently biting.

Here’s what’s biting in Destin this week:

Bottom Fish Biting This Week

  • Triggerfish
  • Vermilion Snapper
  • White Snapper
  • Scamp Grouper

Troll/Sight Fish Biting This Week

  • Spanish Mackerel

From Captain Payton

It’s been a little of a nasty week this week with some wind and rain coming in the last few days. We’ve been able to get out there a few times this week, but not too many. The water was warming up nicely and right around 68 degrees (70 degrees is the magic number for spring fishing) but this weekend will likely cool it off a little as the temps have dropped significantly since yesterday.

We’re still getting some really good mingo (vermillion) snapper bites out there! The scamp grouper are abundant as well over natural bottom, if you’re lucky you can find some nice keepers fairly close to shore.

Spanish mackerel have shown up and are thick in the harbor some mornings. We troll Spanish trees (straw trees) weighted and unweighted to pick up a pile of them.

Triggerfish came into season on the 1st, and we’ve been having some good success finding some nice keepers out there! There’s not many reef fish better tasting than a triggerfish!

Hopefully next week will be a lot nicer, as spring break has officially kicked off down here! We are getting booked up solid with the new arrivals in town, and don’t have too many spots left on to fish this spring! Go ahead and book a trip now while you can before we fill up!

Tight lines y’all!
