From Captain Payton

The beginning of this week was beautiful, and calm out there. The next few days are going to be way too windy to get out there in 5-7ft waves, unfortunately. That didn’t stop us from catching a lot of fish though!

Spring time is rolling in with temps getting close to the 70’s outside, and the bite is on. The mingo (vermillion) snapper are on fire, as well as the white snapper. Natural bottom and cut bait are your best friend right now to bring home a box full of them.

We’ve gotten into the keeper scamp grouper too near shore which means there’s going to be a pretty decent amount of scamp out there feeding close to shore. I can’t give up all the secrets on where we get them, but try using a butterfly jig for these elusive grouper.

And finally we are seeing some blackfin being brought in off the troll! Live bait is your best friend here, but don’t be afraid to try a few types of trolling lures to see if one hooks up. We hear some of the wrecks may be holding blackfin at the moment.

The sheepshead tournament is this weekend, and it’s probably going to be a big turnout. Good luck to everyone participating!

Tight lines y’all!
